The Japanese American Citizens League Seattle Chapter expressed concerns for the recent actions and responses to the Seattle City Council’s decision on Monday against the Occidental Street Vacation for a professional sports arena.
“Seattle JACL is deeply disturbed by the overtly anti-woman hate speech,” the organizations states.
“…The ordinance failed in a vote of 5-4, with the Seattle City Council’s female-majority voting against it, while the male councilmembers voted in its favor. Since the vote on Monday, individuals on social media have spewed demeaning generalizations, direct personal attacks and threats against the five female Seattle city council members.
“Regardless of anyone’s emotional investment in this project, there is zero tolerance for this kind of speech against any person. Seattle and the United States have a long way to go to truly shift the paradigm of what we consider ‘acceptable’ behavior toward women. Seattle JACL denounces the use of sexist and threatening language as an avenue for self-expression.”
JACL Seattle is the original chapter of the nation’s oldest and largest Asian-American civil rights organization, established in 1928.
